Youth strategy from the municipality of Emmaboda in Sweden

In Emmaboda municipality the youth strategy focuses on tackling 4 main problems defined in both CaSYPoT and LUPP surveys:
1) a lot of young people do not feel safe in their municipality
2) a lot of young people suffer from mental issues
3) a lot of young people consume alcohol, narcotics, drugs and tobacco in large quantities and at a young age
4) a lot of young people feel that their participation is limited.

The main core of Emmaboda’s youth strategy is their vision, formulated as follows:
“My life, my future and my opportunities are created right here and right now in Emmaboda municipality.
All people are born unique with different abilities but with the same right to their own life and the same opportunity for development as everyone else. Our society must be characterized by the fact that all children and young people are given a childhood, built on perspectives with rights as tools. Growth should strengthen one’s self-esteem and ability to live in our society.
Emmaboda municipality is developing positively, through dialogue aiming towards creating solutions and opportunities and based on a culture of trust in order to strengthen children’s and young people’s self-esteem and belief in themselves.”

The focus areas with a major impact on each individual’s possibilities and the conditions for building a positive society for all are as follows:
 SAFETY – Goal: to create a safe and trustworthy community for everyone.
 MENTAL HEALTH – Goal: to have healthy youth who can lead an independent life
 PREVENTION OF ANDT (alcohol, narcotics, drugs and tobacco) – Goal: to reduce the use of ANDT among youth.
 PARTICIPATION – Goal: to include youth in the decision-making process leading to increased participation among youth.
